Fred Chance was a composer of chamber music, poetry and theater pieces.

Mr. Chance died at his Cleveland home Dec. 5 of complications due to AIDS. He was 33.

He was born in Mason, O. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in music composition and physics.

He did some work toward a master's degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Mr. Chance's compositions have been performed in Houston, Evanston, Ill., Oberlin, Painesville and Cleveland. His poetry was published as recently as last month in the old City Times.

According to Paul Zimmerman, his companion of 10 years, Mr. Chance recited one of his poems, about AIDS, entitled "Positive Thinking," at Oberlin last month. The reading was accompanied by music. A theater piece, "Jar," about emotional repression, was performed at the Cleveland Public Theatre in 1989.

Mr. Chance was tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus in 1988, Mr. Zimmerman said.

Mr. Chance is survived by his parents, Harold and Joyce; a brother; and a sister.

Graveside remembrances are 1 p.m. today at Whitehaven Cemetery, 615 SOM Center Rd., Mayfield.
