In 1856 the Collings family which consisted of father, Richard Collings, age 37, mother Emma, age 30 and their five children which included Louisa, age 9, crossed the Mormon trail with the Edward Martin Company. The Edward Martin Company, the 5th handcart company, departed the outfitting post at Iowa City, Iowa on 28 July 1856 with 575 individuals, 145 handcarts and 8 wagons and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 30, 1856.

Two brothers of Louisa's are William Richard and George.
