The son of John & Sarah Catherine (Hollinger) Cleaver, he married Lydia Ann Mummert November 24, 1859, and fathered Mary Alice (b. 04/05/60), John Adam (b. 10/18/62), Elizabeth A. (b. 12/??/64), William F. (b. 1868), Annie & Charles Augusta (b. 04/01/70 - Annie died 08/11/70), and David D. (b. 12/08/73, d. 07/??/74). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Huntington Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 6" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry ("Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. His last name is on the roll as "Clever," possibly indicating its pronunciation.

Lydia died in 1874, and he married Jane E. Day, fathering Joseph William (b. 01/20/76), Margaret Catherine (b. 07/04/79 - married a Weigel), Lewis Harry (b. 04/09/81- his death certificate claims 1879, which, given Margaret's birth, is virtually impossible), and Myrtle A. (b. 01/28/83 - married Wilbur H. Noggle). In 1890, he lived in York Springs, Adams County, where he died at age 59-6-28.
