A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry ("Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. His last name is on the roll as "Clever," possibly indicating its pronunciation.
Lydia died in 1874, and he married Jane E. Day, fathering Joseph William (b. 01/20/76), Margaret Catherine (b. 07/04/79 - married a Weigel), Lewis Harry (b. 04/09/81- his death certificate claims 1879, which, given Margaret's birth, is virtually impossible), and Myrtle A.
