James A Turner shoots Thomas Buckner in a quarrel

On the evening of the eleventh, James A. Turner killed his cousin Thomas Buckner out west of the city on the Booker farm near Lipscomb. The circumstances leading to the unfortunate tragedy as reported to the Democrat are as follows:
The young men met at the home of Mr. Rigby on what seemed to be the friendliest of terms when Buckner remarked to Mrs. Pipkin that he (Buckner) had spent previous night at the home of her daughter beyond Williamsport. Here Turner it seems interrupted with the remark that he (Buckner) had not told him that, when a dispute arose. Buckner replied that they would leave the house to settle the dispute, so they went to the barn gate where the killing took place.
Mr. Pipkin followed them we hear and we are told that he was only in a few feet of them when the shooting took place.
Another version of the unfortunate affair is that Buckner caught Turner by the throat and choked him so tightly that he could not get loose, when he drew his pistol shooting him in the side.
Turner's father came to the city and told Sheriff Ragsdale of the killing who went down and brought the young man to town placing him in jail.
The trial was set for Tuesday before Esq. Coleburn but we understand a continuance has been granted until Friday at 2 o'clock.
Turner is about 18 years old, and the young man who was slain was only 22.
J. M. Buckner, Father of the dead boy was in town Monday and was deeply distressed over the unfortunate occurrence.
He told a Democrat reporter that he thought he had experienced great trouble in his life, but never realized true meaning of the word until now. Mr. Buckner has a wife and six children still living.
The burial of young Buckner took place Saturday at Mt. Nebo.

For more on this incident see the James Anderson Turner listing in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia.
