He married Catherine Craig, but they apparently had no children. In 1860, he was a merchant living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsyvlania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of forty-four and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as 2nd lieutenant of Co. E, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. After his military stint ended, he served on the examining board stationed in Chambersburg, Franklin County. His obituary in the Adams County Independent erroneously lists his regiment as the 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, although the Gettysburg Compiler got it right.

He served several terms as burgess of Gettysburg and died there at the reported age of 82-9-19.
