C.W. "Jim" Long, 98, of New Market, VA, died September 3, 2017 at his home at VMRC.

He was born in Mt. Jackson, VA on May 5, 1919 and was the son of Homer Allen and Margaret Grace Barton Long.

For 73 years, Jim was a devoted and loving husband to his surviving wife, Frances Mullen Long. Jim and Fran raised four sons at their home, Franwood Farms, in New Market. C.W. (Bill), Jr. predeceased his father, but Jim is survived by Bill’s wife Sandra, Allan and his wife Nancy, Larry and his wife Carolyn, and Stephen and his wife Sadonna, all from New Market; grandchildren, Carissa Johns of New Market, Brent Long of New Market, Chris (Alexis) Long of Reston, Carey (Don) Evans of Harpers Ferry, WV, Stephen (Megan) Long, Jr., of New Market, Matthew Long of New Market, Adam (Lisa) Long of New Market, Jeremy Orebaugh of Harrisonburg, Charles (Anna) Long of Middlebrook, Emma (Brooks) Garber of Arlington, Taylor Long of New Market, and Andrew (Katie) Long of Harrisonburg. Jim had seventeen great-grandchildren: Paige, Anna, Ryan, and Nichalas Johns; Robert and William Long; Nathan, Henry, and Garrett Evans; Isabel, Elizabeth, Atticus, Oakley, and Declan Long; Stella Long; Abraham Long; and Noah Long (deceased).

Jim was one of nine children. He is survived by his brother Harry and wife Virginia, brother Wayne and wife Ann, and sister-in-law Nellie. Predeceasing him in death were brothers H.B., John and Homer and sisters Madlyn Fleming, Louise Nairn, and Phyllis Hughes. Family was of the utmost importance to Jim, and he greatly enjoyed his siblings, their spouses, his Mullen family, and his many nieces and nephews.

Jim was a devout Christian and active member of Reformation Lutheran Church; was a leader for many decades in the poultry industry in the Valley, Virginia, and the nation; and made many contributions of his resources, time, and talents to his community of Shenandoah County. Jim, unable to attend school past the ninth grade, was an ardent supporter of education and helped many young people pursue their academic dreams.

At the age of 95, Jim wrote a memoir of his business experiences. Many of the people who worked for and alongside him are named. He held them in the highest regard as they did him. His book is in the archives at the Shenandoah County Library.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, September 9, at 1:00 PM at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market, with Pastor Jeffrey Sonafelt officiating. Interment will be private. The body was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Reformation Lutheran Church Pre-School / P.O. Box 896 / New Market, VA 22844.
