Son of Patriot and Politician Robert Abernathy IV of Virginia and Sarah Abernethy of Scotland.

James Abernathy would serve in The Revolutionary war like his father and many relatives. He made the rank of Captain in the Granville Militia mostly against Indian attacks and "loyalists" for the English crown.
James and his wife are mentioned as "witnesses" and Notaries on many legal documents in the county of Lincoln NC. He was also charged with "surveying" new roads in the area as well.
After the war James Abernathy would buy land on the Catawba River where he would own and operate the "Abernathy Ferry". In addition to this he helped to build the Hebron Baptist Church which was on Abernathy property where he worshipped up to his un-timely death in 1785. James Abernathy drowned while operating his ferry due to large flooding river. Today, this area is known as Rozelles Ferry Road near Charlotte NC.

The probate for James Abernathy had a interesting name on it, a neighbor of his by the name of General Peter Forney who was one of the administrators. Besides being a war hero, Peter Forney was invested in iron ore mines in the area and would be in North Carolina politics. Peter Forney would be married to a cousin of James Abernathy (Nancy Abernathy) daughter of Patriot David Harwell Abernathy.
