Susan was the daughter of John & Eliza Fleming Morgan McMullin. Her maternal grandfather was Daniel Morgan of Fleming, Kentucky, who was a senator and congressman. Susan's parents moved to California and prospered in the ranching industry. Her father John died the year that Susan was born.

In about 1883, Susan met Thomas Hansford Williams, Jr. at a dance and they became engaged. Tom was the son of prosperous landowner General Thomas H. Williams. Unfortunately, Tom's father and Susan's mother Eliza had had a falling-out over some business dealings and both opposed the engagement. Susan broke off the engagement. Soon after, she became engaged to Charles F. Hanlen. She encountered Tom again, broke off her engagement to Charles, and married Tom, to the consternation of both of their parents. They married in San Francisco in October 1884. Susie was 16 years old. Thomas was a senior member and later President of the horseracing society in California.

The marriage soon encountered problems, and they were separated by May 1885. On July 31, 1885, Susie shot herself. The news accounts indicated an "accident". On Dec 5, 1885, Susie appeared on stage in a play. The news article referred to her appearance as a social sensation, referring to her as "the discarded wife of Tom Williams."

By May 1886, Susan filed for divorce from Thomas H. Williams, Jr., charging Tom with committing adultery adultery from May 1885 - 3 Aug 1885 with women unknown. On May 29, 1886, Susie attempted suicide by leaving the gas on the oven. The newspapers reported "multiple suicide attempts covered up as accidents by the family". Note - her brother Beauregard McMullin did commit suicide. Her brother-in-law Percy Williams owned a racehorse that he named "Beaury Mac" after Susan's brother.

In June 1886, the papers reported that Thomas had allowed the divorce by default.

In 1887 Susie attended the marriage of her sister and in January 1888, she attended the marriage of her brother John McMullin.

Susan married married Edwin L. Fant on February 14, 1889. They lived in Fleming, Kentucky.

In March, Thomas filed suit to cease alimony payments as his ex-wife had "recently married a man from Kentucky". Thomas Hansford Williams, Jr. remarried to Beatrice Grey Steele in California in 1901.

Susie died at the age of 21, just 8 months after her marriage to Ed L. Fant. Her death was reported in both Kentucky and California newspapers.
