Another Pioneer Joins the Silent Majority.
John I. Sykes, one of the best-known men in this county, died at Nevada City Sunday evening at the advanced age of 77 years.
The deceased was a native of St. Lawrence, New York, whence he came to California in the early 'fifties, most of his time being spent in this county , which he ably served in several positions of trust. Mr. Sykes was the first Recorder of Nevada county, and also looked after its interests in the Assembly.
In Grass Valley, his home for two-score years, he was postmaster for a dozen years and was also elected a Justice of the Peace.
Mr. Sykes was a graduate of the Montpelier Law School, and practiced law in New York before coming to the Golden West. The deceased came from a family known to fame and was related to Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is known to all.
Mr. Sykes was a good man, a gentleman of culture, fine attainments and liberal views. His friends and admirers are legion, but he was of such a sensitive nature that he refused assistance from anyone.
His remains will be interred at Greenwood cemetery. The funeral cortege will start from the undertaking parlors of John Hocking at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon.
