Celebration of life services for Janice S. Dickerson will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at Piedmont United Methodist Church with burial following in the Kansas Cemetery east of Piedmont. Services are under the direction of Smith & Turner Mortuary, Yukon.

Mrs. Dickerson, 70, passed away suddenly on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at her home in Piedmont. Janice was a retired teacher, teaching at Piedmont and Deer Creek.

She earned her teaching degree from OU along with a master’s degree in English from UCO.

After retirement she worked several years at Williams-Sonoma (thought to be just for the discount available). She loved her dinner group from Williams-Sonoma and other retired teachers, particularly Pam Koper and Judy Fitzer with whom she talked regularly. She especially enjoyed talking to her former students.

Jan had chosen the following on her monument referring to her students: “I gave them wings.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Hand; sister, Sheri Hand; and her grandson, Aaron Hendrix.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, retired Canadian County Judge Ken Dickerson; son, John Dickerson of Edmond; daughter, Dia Dickerson of Piedmont; grandchildren, Harlee Dickerson of Los Angeles, Hayden and Emily Teeman of Edmond and Hayden and Makenna Hendrix of Piedmont. Jan is also survived by brother-in-law, Jerry Dickerson and wife, Lois of Piedmont; sister-in-law, Thelma Dickerson of Purcell.
