YAKIMA - Bettie L. (Wikstrom) Ball, 82, of Yakima, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her children on Saturday, March 3, 2007. She was born August 26,1924 in Othello, WA to Oscar and Xerpha (Showalter) Wilstrom. She was the oldest of four children. In 1928, the family moved to Yakima. She attended Nob Hill School, Franklin Jr. High and graduated from Yakima High, class of 1943. After graduation, she attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Lewiston, ID and was employed at Yakima County Hospital. In 1967-68, she attended YVCC, continuing her nursing education and worked for a short time at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital as a practical nurse.

Bettie and Francis Jay Ball were neighborhood sweethearts. They were married June 8, 1946. At the time of Bettie's death, she resided in the house that Francis Jay built in the neighborhood where they grew up together. In 1993, Bettie became a widow after 47 years of marriage. Bettie was a full time homemaker, giving unwavering love to her six children. At one time or another, she was a Blue Bird, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader. In her earlier years, her hobbies were bowling, gardening and woodworking. Later, her hobbies included painting with oils and watercolor. She was a member of the Yakima Valley Society of Artists and held past president, secretarty, treasurer and other offices. She also was invoved in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees related to her husband's post office job. Bettie eagerly looked forward to family gatherings and if anyone wanted to travel, she always had her bags packed and was ready to go! She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Bettie is survived by five children, Karen (Tony) Rizzo, Paula (Dennis) Cooper, Vickie (Darrell) Bechard, and Cheryl Johnson, all of Yakima, and Steven (Helen) Ball of Lacey, WA. She loved being a grandmother to her ten grandchildren, Kenneth (Alice) Noel, Tammy (Mark) Chance, Kimberly (Allen) McWain, Stephanie Noel, Karrey (Tom) Allan, Tricia (Mark) Sawyer, Theron Cooper, Trina (Dan) Arnott, Troy (Sachiko) Feldheger and Tiffany (Mike) Johnson. She also cherished her fourteen great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis J. Ball, Sr. a Son, Francis J. "Butch" Ball, Jr., her three younger siblings, Pauline, Geraldine and Charles, and a great-grandchild, Vanessa.

Viewing will be Wednesday, noon until 8:00 p.m. at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Funeral sevices will be Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Interment will follow in West Hills Memorial Park.

Many will miss her smile, laughter and kind heart. We would like to thank our sister, Cheryl who took care of Mom in later years and allowed Mom her wish to remain at home. We truely appreciate all the sacrafices you made. We also would like to thank our niece, Kimberly, who helped Cheryl in the excelent care of Mom. Memorials may be made to the Freye Museum,c/o Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.
