William Mulford was born about 1620 at Cadbury, Devonshire, England to Thomas and Susan Southcott Molford. He sailed from England, our Mulford immigrant, landing in Salem, Massachusetts in May 1643. That same year, he left Massachusetts with his brother John, coming to Southampton, Long Island, New York. Both were on the Southampton whale commission while living there, in addition to William being a farmer. William married Sarah Akers in 1648, possibly at Suffolk County, Massachusetts, or more likely at Southampton. She was born about 1622 at South Molton, Devon, England to Thomas and Priscilla Coker Akers. She died after March 15, 1687 at East Hampton. William and Sarah's children were: Elizabeth, Thomas, William Jr., Sarah, Rachel, Isaac, Benjamin and Martha. William's brother John was one of the original 9 signers of the Indian deed for East Hampton, for which they paid 30 shillings. However, things didn't go as planned, so in 1648, the state of Connecticut paid the Indians for 31,000 acres of what is now East Hampton. The cost was 20 coats, 24 hoes, 24 hatchets, 24 knives, 24 looking glasses and 100 muges; the grantors reserving to themselves the right of fishing, hunting and fowling, the fins and tails of whales cast upon the shore, the skins of deer driven by them into the water and killed by the English and the right to fish for shells for wampum. In 1649, the families moved from Southampton to East Hampton, becoming some of the first settlers. William died March 8, 1687 at East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York and is presumed buried there.
