Dexter, joined his father, Oliver Ballou, in the family-run milling business. Overcoming losses due to an 1829 mill fire, Dexter expanded the firm into one of the largest in Woonsocket and became sole owner of the Social Mill property Nov. 12, 1841, and built the first stone mill there, which was destroyed by fire July 1, 1874. He promoted temperance and was interested in employee welfare. He started the Woonsocket Falls Bank, of which he was president, 1828-49, and hosted early organizational meetings of the Universalist society.
