In 1940, he resides in Perris Twp, Riverside Co., CA with his niece Hazel Steinly & her husband George. John is a widower & farming. Hazel had been married to a Mr. Steen & had a daughter from that marriage. Apparently John was not a widower as May remarried on 6 September 1924 in Los Angeles, CA. She was a practical nurse & resided in San Jose at the time.
