"Very Reverend Father Gregory J. Gilroy, O.F.M. Conv.:
On Wednesday, December 10, 2003, the Rector of the Cathedral of St. Thomas Aquinas in Reno, Nevada died at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, following a recent illness. Father Gilroy, age 50, had served as Rector of the Cathedral and local Superior of the Conventual Franciscan Community since August 1, 2001. Born in Seattle, Washington on May 7, 1953, Gregory James Gilroy was the second oldest of four boys born to Bud and Marge Gilroy. Father Gilroy taught for several years in Catholic secondary education, beginning in 1976, prior to his entrance into the Conventual Franciscan Order. On August 15, 1982 Fr. Gilroy was admitted into the novitiate of the friars in Arroyo Grande, Calif. Having professed solemn vows in the Order in 1986, and having completed his course of ministerial training in Berkeley, Calif. Fr. Gilroy was ordained to the priesthood on June 18, 1988 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hermosa Beach, Calif. by the late Bishop Carl Fisher of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Following his ordination, Fr. Gilroy served as an instructor at Archdiocesan Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif. In 1990 Fr. Gilroy was appointed to serve as Associate Pastor, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hermosa Beach. The following September 1st he assumed the duties of Pastor of the same parish. Beginning in July of 1999 Fr. Gilroy returned to service in Catholic education, which he loved so well, ministering at Notre Dame High School in Riverside, Calif. Father Gilroy served his fellow friars both as Guardian of the local community in Reno, Nevada as well as Provincial Delegate for Education in his province, comprising friars who serve in parishes and other ministries in California and across the United States. Father Gilroy was an accomplished musician, and will be remembered among his fellow Franciscans for his hospitality, love of the liturgy of the Church, and his fine administrative abilities. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Phillip Straling, Bishop of Reno at the Cathedral on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003 at 12:10 p.m. Burial will follow at the Friars' Province Cemetery in Arroyo Grande, Calif. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m."
