Mr Nicholson was born in the year of 1864 in the area of Attercliffe. Mr Nicholson became a huge figure with Sheffield football as well as the cricket within the city.

John started off at a local football club called Attercliffe FC which were based at Brightside Lane for their matches which at some stage the team was a strong threat playing at a good level within the game and playing in the oldest competition which is the FA Cup. Mr Nicholson had a huge influence on Sheffield & Hallamshire Junior league as well.

With his talents very poplar within the game, the recently former club Sheffield United FC had Sir Charles Clegg invited John as part of the committee to drive the red & white of the city to become a strong threat within the English game.

John become a strong figure head of the club becoming the club secretary before 'managers' become a thing with the game. For 33 years Nicholson had built unbelievable sides and becoming one of the cities greatest ever sons with the achievements of the game has to offer.

In 1932, Mr John Nicholson, secretary of the Sheffield United Football Club, was knocked down by a lorry and killed as he was about to set off from Sheffield with the team for their match on Saturday with Aston Villa at Birmingham. The players were waiting at the railway station for Mr Nicholson to join them with their tickets, and they saw him killed. He was seen to alight from a tram-car, and as he came from behind the car to cross the road he failed to see an approaching coal lorry and was knocked down. He suffered severe head injuries, and was carried to the pavement, where he died while receiving first-aid from a railway clerk.

The funeral service was held at Ebenezer Wesleyan Reform Church with which Mr Nicholson was associated. The tickets were purchased and were refused entered if you didn't have tickets, the roads outside were a solid mass of people all the way to Staniforth Road. The crowd inside and in the neighbourhood of the cemetery numbered at least 6,000. Police, mounted and on foot.

Mr Nicholson was carried to his final resting place by players such as Billy Gillespie, Jack Kendall, Fred Cheesmur, Harry Gooney, Jesse Bennett, Jimmy Holmes, Bert Oswald and Tommy Sampy. The floral tributes included emblems in the shape of a football, a cricket bat, a music stand and a harp with a broken string.

Arguably, after nearly century. The club has never got back to its true heights again. Honest John was one of the greatest leaders of the club with the major trophies accomplished in a small amount of time.

As quote once said by Lord Hawke "He was a good, kind soul, and always very obliging. I should say he has given excellent service to Bramall Lane and United football."

At this moment in time, Mr Nicholson is the fourth most successful manager to win the FA Cup. The other three are Sir Alex Ferguson, George Ramsey and Arsène Wenger.

In 2023, after many years of people perusing the project. Recently formed Sheffield United Preservation Society created by the supporters to protect the clubs heritage with former players and their achievements. They raised money to restore the grave to its former glory and is now preserved for future generations to appreciate the legacy of the great man.

Gravesite Details

In 2023, the grave has been restored by Sheffield United Preservation Society to ensure that many more generations can appreciate the legacy of John Nicholson. The grave marker is intact with new extras added.
