Bill Kendrick was born on November 27, 1925 in Alva, Oklahoma to Gertrude and Carey Van Kendrick. He left his friends and loved ones to be with the Lord on January 10, 2013, at the age of 87 in Oklahoma City, OK. Bill attended school in Alva graduating in 1942. As a member of the Greatest Generation, Bill joined the Navy and served in WWII. He also served in the Korean Conflict stationed in France working in a moving picture until making war related film under Eisenhower in Shape headquarters. Following his military service, Bill became a life long educator. He returned to Alva to attend Northwestern State College graduating with a speech and debate teaching degree. His teaching career included positions in Cimarron, Hutchinson, and Lorrance, KS. After earning his school administration degree, his early career lead him ro Phillipsburg, LaCrosse, and Morland, KS. Later he became the Superintendent of School for Park County, Colorado before retiring from Superintendent of Schools in Elbert County Colorado in 1992. On retirement he started twelve years of travel adventure motor homing; after which, he then settled in the community of Durham, Oklahoma.
Bill will be remembered as a passionate outdoorsman who loved hunting and began doing so as a child around Alva, a love that countinued throughout his life at every opportunity, as recently as this fall. He made many close friends and acquaintainces in the duck blind and field who will miss him greatly. Bill was a man of patience and optimism. He saw life as an adventure and lived it with grace and love for the Lord who he saw in the natural world around him. His love for family, nature, this nation, the Lord, and his family filled every fiber of his being.
Bill was preceded in death by a son William D. Jr. and his wife Mary Joe. He leaves his wife Leslie Ann of Durham, Oklahoma; two sons, Gary Long of Oklahoma City and Jeffery Scott Kendrick of Manteca, CA; two daughters, Pamela Joe Schrader of Derby, KS and two step-sons, Kelly Plunk of Ridgeway, Virginia and Michael Plunk of Towanda, KS. Bill will also be missed by his nine grandchildren. Bill leaves behind an abundance of friends and acquaintances who loved him and many young people whose lives he changed during the course of his work as an educator.
