Thomas Morrison arrived in USA July 1851 with his family and settled in Brooklyn, New York. When his father chose to move the family to Canada, Thomas and several of the older children decided to stay in the US, and settled in Newark, NJ. There, around 1870, Thomas and his older brother William took over the related Teare family's Oyster Shell Lime Kiln business on Clover and corner of Van Buren, Newark, NJ. Thomas was in charge of the business, and William, a Teamster, drove the wagons.

Thomas married Rachel James in 1869, and resided at 104 Peabody Place, his last residence. They had two children, Thomas J. and Bessie (Elizabeth) who both, unfortunately, passed away in their teens.
