Mrs. Ernest Horstmann was born Margaritha Marie Hocke, the daughter of John and Marie Hocke on April 21, 1862 in Olendorf, Germany.
She departed this life on November 22, 1946 at her home south of Calumet at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 1 day.
She attended the schools near her home as a child and was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church.
On February 17, 1888, she was united in marriage to Ernest D. Horstmann at Staffort, Germany. To them were born nine children.
On May 9, 1892, they came to America, making their home near Calumet, Iowa. They had enjoyed nearly 59 years of happily married life at the time of her passing.
She was preceded in death by 3 daughters: Marie, who at the age of a year and a half died in Germany, another daughter who died in infancy, and Alma (Mrs. Fritz Oeffner) who passed away at the age of 26.
The deceased enjoyed good health the many years of her life, and was ill for only 8 days preceding her death.
She is survived by her husband and 6 children, Dora (Mrs. Geo. Dau) of Sutherland, John of Deerwood, Minn., George and Henry of Sutherland, Clarence of Calumet and Vena (Mrs. Clarence Oeffner) of Paullina; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends. She was a kind friends and neighbor and a willing helper to those in need.
