SENECA — Wayland Hoyt "Sam" Adams Jr. 82, husband of 64 years of Virginia West Adams, of 710 Oak Shore Ct., Seneca, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007 at the AnMed Health Center in Anderson after a brief illness. Mr. and Mrs. Adams was formerly of 406 Springdale Drive, Union.
Mr. Adams was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 23, 1925, a son of the late Wayland Hoyt Adams Sr. and Fannie Vanderford Adams. He was a graduate of Union High School and was retired as store manager from Sherwin Williams Paints in Union. Mr. Adams was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps having served during World War II as a tail gunner on a B-25 bomber. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served the church in various capacities. Mr. Adams was a former member of the Lions Club and the Union Elks Lodge.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Anne A. Mitros and husband Pat, of Seneca; one grandson: Ashley Mitros and wife Kristi, of Simpsonville; and two greatgranddaughters, Olivia Mitros and Cameron Mitros, of Simpsonville. Mr. Adams was predeceased by three sisters, Frances A. Kirby, Lucille A. Johns and Laura A. Sullivan.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Frank Lybrand and the Rev. Gary Byrd.
The following are asked to assemble at the graveside at 10:45 a.m. Saturday to form the honorary escort: Charlie Vaughan, Dan Vaughan, Melvin Timmons, Rick Morris, Don Moore, Ted Purvis, Ralph Greer, Jack Kirby, Herbert West, Eric Walker, Marshall Caldwell and Marvin Ford.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union, S.C. 29379, or to Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 144, Townsville, S.C. 29689 or to a charity of one's choice.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vaughan, 212 Hillcrest Drive, Union, S.C., 29379.
