Doris E. Crawford, 86, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, at Sharon Care in Centralia, WA. She was born on Nov. 28, 1930, in Creelman, Saskatchewan, Canada; the sixth of 10 children, born to Magnus and Matilda Elias.

After graduating from high school in 1949, Doris moved to Los Angeles, Calif. She graduated from Bishop Johnson College of Nursing in 1955, and became a U.S. Citizen Sept. 6, 1956. She worked at Los Angeles Children's Hospital and attended UCLA, where she earned her bachelor of science in nursing in 1958.

She taught nursing in California junior colleges from 1959 to 1961, then went back to UCLA and earned her master's degree in 1963.

While in L.A,, Doris joined an ice skating club, where she met and skated with a tall, handsome man from Missouri, named Douglas.

The two were married Nov. 26, 1964.

In 1965, Doris went back to teaching nursing in Sacramento, while Doug was a civil engineer, employed for the California Bridge Department. Together, they moved to Adna, Wash., in 1974.

Doris took the Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent exam and passed.

She worked for Bottom Line doing income tax preparation and taught volunteers to do income taxes for AARP. She took a nursing job at Green Hill, which was a boy's detention center in Chehalis.

This job was advertised for two months and she ended up working there well over 20 years!

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas, who passed away in September of 2014. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary that November. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Ruthie, Art, Georgina, Penny, Fred, Herb and Victor.

She is survived by her sisters, Ida Allingham of Lakeside, Calif., and Jean Gottfried Weyburn, of Saskatchewan, Canada; brother-in-law, Earl Crawford of Washington, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and her good friend and caregiver, Linda Anderson, who will miss her dearly.

Doris' family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Sharon Care, who were so kind and loving toward her.

A service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Sticklin Funeral Chapel, 1437 S. Gold Street, Centralia, with a reception following the service in the Chapel's Hospitality Room.

Inurnment will take place at Claquato Cemetery after the reception.
