Martha Frances Hale was born on January 24, 1928, and was promoted to her great reward on July 23, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Martha was born in Lone Mountain, Tennessee, to Willie Edward Phelps and Birtie Florence Phelps (Davis). Martha graduated from Bethesda Bible School of Portland, OR, where she met and married the love of her life Donald Carroll Hale “Papaw” on September 24, 1949.

Martha began her working career in the cleaners as a silk finisher in Forest Grove, OR, until she met and married Donald in Bible school, where she began her God-given calling as a Mother and homemaker. Martha and Donald began ministry as evangelists and pastors, and ministered all over the United States, then settled in Salem, OR, as pastors of Faith Tabernacle, renamed as Gateway Community Church for 50+ years. Martha worked nights, seasonally in the cannery at Stayton Canning Company.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents Ed and Birtie, husband Donald, and daughter Patricia.

Martha is survived by her brother, William Paul Phelps and a host family of Knoxville, TN; her sister, Hazel Edwina Bayless, of Laguna Hills, CA; daughters: LaDonna Ross and Tina Howard, of Salem; sons: Rev. Phil (Marty) Hale, Steve Hale, Rick (Leslie) Hale, Nate Hale, of Salem, and Scott (Sandy) Hale, of Columbia City; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 4, 2017, from 1:00–4:00 pm at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services. A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 11:00 am, at Gateway Community Church, 922 Hylo Road SE, Salem, OR 97306.

Flowers and donations can be sent to the church. There will be a potluck fellowship following the service.

There will be a graveside committal for Martha at Rosedale Friends Cemetery after the meal.
