Sheila Hagerty Day was born in Washington D.C. on November 14, 1935, to her parents Lillian Zinsmeister and Frank Hagerty, both deceased. She is survived by her loving husband Robert L. Day and her 3 sisters, Margaret Michalak, Katherine Eberhard and Mary Sabo; by her beloved children Jennifer Day, Elizabeth Day, Peter Day [Linda], Mary Nichols and Rebecca DiLoreto [Marty]; and by her much loved 11 grandchildren Jack, Nick, Joe and Mike Day; Mary, Tony and Phoebe DiLoreto; Sophia and Gavin Nichols and Christopher and Katie Nix. Mrs. Day graduated from New Trier High School in 1953 and the Northwestern University School of Education in 1957. While at Northwestern, Mrs. Day played field hockey and 50 years after graduating was awarded a Varsity letter and membership in the N Club. Immediately following graduation, she joined the staff of American Airlines as a stewardess. Later in life, she continued her studies earning the Degree of Master of Education from National College of Education as well as the Degree of Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from Rosary College. She was an elementary school teacher and later a children's librarian for many years in several northern suburbs. Sheila was committed to volunteering with several local organizations such as Meals on Wheels, the Northfield Food Pantry and was an active member of St. Norbert's parish during her life in Northbrook. She also enjoyed tennis, golf and travel but her passion was in art. She produced many highly regarded acrylic and pastel pieces which were displayed throughout the North Shore and was elected a member of the Northbrook Arts Commission. A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 9:30 am until time of the Mass at 10:30 am at St. Norbert Church, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook. Interment will be private at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Many thanks and gratitude go to the NorthShore University HealthSystem Home & Hospice Services.
