Carroll Smith was born in 1833/34 and died after April 24, 1882

Carroll Smith was born in about 1833/34 in Lawrence County, Illinois and died sometime after April 24, 1882 which is when he sold land in Richland County, Illinois. He was the son of William J. Smith and Anna E. (Laws) Smith. His military discharge paper indicates he was born in Richland County, Illinois. Richland County, Illinois was formed from Lawrence County on February 24, 1841.

In 1840, Carroll was counted with the Wm. Smith family in Lawrence County, Illinois. He would've been about 6 or 7 years old.

On November or December 11, 1850, "Carrel" Smith, age 16, lived in Clay and Richland of Richland County, Illinois with his mother and siblings. His father William J. Smith had died in the summer of 1846 when Carroll was about age 12. In 1850, he was a farmer and had attended school within the year.

"Carroll" Smith married Mary Frances Cropper in Richland County, Illinois by Jacob Leighty, J. P. on Sunday, January 1, 1860.

"Carroll", age 25, and Mary, age 17, were living next to his mother Anna Smith in Claremont Township, Richland County, Illinois on August 1, 1860. This census indicates that they were married within the year. Carroll was a farm laborer.

On April 10, 1862, "Carol" Smith mustered in with Company C, 63rd Illinois Inf. at Olney, Illinois.

Mary and Carroll were the parents of William Carl Smith who was born on August 4, 1863 in Richland County, Illinois. They were also parents of a daughter who according to family history died with her mother in a house fire. (information from NJC 50022121 on September 29, 2019)

In 1865, the Illinois State census records "Carrol" Smith, wife and child living in Claremont, Richland, Illinois. Their daughter must have been born after this.

By 1870, Mary Cropper Smith and their young daughter had died. Son William Smith, age 6, was living in Claremont, Richland County, Illinois with his maternal grandfather Nathaniel Cropper on June 28, 1870. They were living next door to the Amos and Rebecca Beadle family. Rebecca (Laws) Beadle was a first cousin to Carroll Smith. Carroll's location was not found in 1870.

On June 19, 1880, "Carol" Smith, age 46, widowed, lived in Claremont Township, Richland, Illinois as a farm laborer with David F. and Margaret Basden. David Basden was a first cousin 1x removed. Their residence was next to Amanda (Judy) Smith and family. Carrol Smith's mother, Anna (Laws) Smith had died on February 28, 1880 at the home of her daughter in law, Amanda (Judy) Smith.

Carroll's son William, age 16, was also living in Claremont Township, Richland, Illinois in June of 1880. He was laborer and living with: Washington Mower, 56; Douglas Mower, 19; Allen Lough, 23 and Rosa Lough, 21. Rosa was daughter of Washington Mower and she was married to Allen Lough.

Carroll Smith and his sister-in-law Amanda (Judy) Smith sold land on April 24, 1882 in Richland County, Illinois.

Carroll's son William's place of residence in September 1889 was Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, Arkansas, but he was married in Ellery, Edwards County, Illinois. Ellery is on the border of Edwards and Wayne counties. The county line runs along the main street. A witness at William's wedding was his uncle Lovel E. Cropper. The marriage record lists William's father as "Carroll" Smith.

1863 February - transferred to Mississippi Marine Brigade, Ram Fleet

1863 February 14 - Captured on board U.S. Steam Ram "Queen of the West" in Red River, Louisiana [Queen of the West (1862-1863). 406-ton side-wheel steam ram, 181' long]

1863 February 24 - Recruited for Baton Rouge, Louisiana

1863 April 20 - Reported by B. B.

1863 May 23 - 1863 June 6 - furloughed at Benton Barracks by Col. Thomas J. King

1863 June - Muster Roll: "not stated" to June 30, 1863

1863 June 6 - 1863 July 20 - appeared to be absent without leave (this would've been near the time of the birth of his son William)
