Former Steamboat Springs resident Janice Lee Thibault passed away on September 17, 2004, in Mesa, Arizona. She was 78.
Janice was born December 25, 1925, in Steamboat to Henry Clay and Louise Carver Monson. She was the youngest and last surviving member of the Monson family.
Janice's family moved to the Steamboat area in the late 1890s. Her father was well-known throughout town.
Her uncle, Ray Clay, was Routt County's attorney for many years, and her grandmother gave the name to Pleasant Valley, where the family homestead was located.
The remains of their cabin stood until the formation of Lake Catamount.
Janice's sister, Margaret Maguire, was an elementary school teacher until her retirement. Another sister, Betty Card, worked at Routt County National Bank. Other siblings included Donald Monson of Rifle and Mary Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Janice married Ervin Thibault in 1948 in Steamboat. The couple lived in San Francisco for several years before moving to San Jose, where Ervin worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The couple had two children, both of whom survived.
A memorial service for Janice will be held this summer in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
