ROBERT MURRAY FERRIS, the Chief Engineer of The Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania and its associated companies, drowned while swimming, Sunday Morning, July 13, at Sciasconset, Nantucket island. He had started on his vacation the proceeding day and had joined his wife and two children, who were spending the summer at Nantucket. His sudden death was a great shock to all, as his splendid personality and great abilities made him the friend of all who knew
him, and a highly valued member of the Bell organization. He was one of the leading telephone engineers of the world.

Mr. Ferris was thirty-seven years of age. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1897, he stated work in the engineering department of the New York & New Jersey Telephone Company as an engineering assistant. His capabilities assured his rapid advancement....When the organization of the New York& New Jersey Telephone Company was consolidated with that of the New York Telephone Company in 1906 he became an important member of the Combined Engineering Department, and in 1908 he was appointed chief engineer of the New York Telephone Company....In 1912 organization changes were made to bring more closely together the eastern group of Bell Companies...and Mr. Ferris was appointed Chief Engineer of all those companies.

The work which he has done and the friends in all parts of the organization who mourn his sudden death express more adequately than any words the loss we have suffered.
