“Effie” Ball, daughter of Susan Jane (née Brock) and Robert G. Bell, was born on 7 May 1879 in Brown Township, according to a Champaign County, Illinois, birth record.

As "Hattie," age 1, she was enumerated in 1880 with her parents, 11 siblings, and maternal grandmother in Brown Township, Champaign County, Illinois, where her family farmed. As "Ethel," age 21, she was enumerated in 1900 with her widowed father and a sister in same township.

Ethel Ball and William H. Shields were married in 1901 in Champaign County (license dated 25 November 1901). William H. Shields would later succeed Ethel's father as the superintendent of the Foos Farm, a large commercial operation.
