Dorothea passed away in 1954, and David Sr. remained on the farm with several of his children. He continued grain farming until the mid 1960's, when he rented the land out. He kept a small herd of cattle until 1969. He served on Christ Lutheran Church council for many years. He was an avid reader, and read his Bible through several times. He enjoyed caring for his yard and his potato patch. He remained on the farm until he entered the hospital, four months before he passed away.
