While raising three boys, she sewed for the public, making both clothing and draperies. Rita earned her GED in 1968 at Howard County Junior College in Big Spring, Texas. She continued into higher education earning her Associate of Arts degree at Western Texas College. She graduated from UTPB with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology followed by her Master of Education degree in 1986. From 1976 until 1980 she was a substitute teacher for the Colorado City Independent School District. She taught 5th grade at Hutchinson Elementary until 1993 when she became principal at Kelley Elementary. After enjoying a brief two-year retirement, she began teaching computers at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Windham School District. In 2004, after retiring again, she enjoyed many hobbies, including intricate woodworking, gardening and sewing.
She is survived by her sons, Brent Hardegree and wife Stacey of North Richland Hills, Texas, Greg Hardegree of Abilene, Texas and Blake Hardegree and wife Roxi of Lubbock, Texas; by her grandchildren, Jerrod Hardegree, Jacob Hardegree, Christopher Hardegree, Kevin Hardegree, Luke Hardegree, Taylor Hardegree, Mary Martinez and Elizabeth Young and by nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Merrie Jackson and husband Preston of Lead Hill, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Hardegree, her brother, Alvin Conaway and her sister, Nelda McGann.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 4th at 10:00 AM at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery.
