Our mother always said,"I have had a great life." She was born on March 28,1931 in Mayville, one of 13 children. She was a great student, with a wonderful singing voice. A fond childhood memory for her was riding to school in an Amish wagon with a wood stove for warmth. She worked various jobs for spending money and clothes throughout high school. She then moved to Highland Park, Ill. for what we now call a nanny job. She first met our father, Roy Carlson, in Medford with his arm around her sister. That changed and Sandy married Roy on Nov. 11, 1950. They were blessed with three children, Shelly, Bradley and LaVinda. Together they bought and sold many residences while Roy was transferred and promoted with General Motors. She was a terrific cook and baker, Girl Scout leader, choir member, golfer, gardener, volunteer and best mom ever. The family enjoyed an active life, cross country and downhill skiing, skating on Spruce Lake at Roy's childhood home and camping and boating. Sandy was up for all of it. They purchased the Cadillac/Pontiac dealership in Reedsburg, finding a welcoming and vibrant community. Travel was one of their joys, Europe, Norway Olympics, China, Canada and many trips with good friends, Peter and Jesse Conlin. Roy and Sandy loved working together at the home farm and cross country skiing in the woods.
Sandy is survived by her three children, Shelly, Brad (Trudi) and LaVinda; grandchildren, Tom (Rachel) and Steven (Erin) Ritzer, Blake Boyce (fiancé, Chelsea), Clay (Brienne) and Cain Carlson; three great-grandchildren; along with many relatives and friends.
Sandy was predeceased in death by her husband, Roy, the love of her life; many sisters, brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law.
Her leaving us was sudden and unexpected and we will miss her deeply.
Funeral services for LaRae ‘Sandy’ L. Carlson was held on Friday, July 14 at 3 p.m. at the Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg with Pastor Vicki Brantmeyer officiating. Visitation was held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Friday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial was held in Evergreen II Cemetery in Medford on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
