Andrew Joseph Fabian was born on November 27, 1926 ,in Mingo Junction, Ohio, the son of Michael and Anna (Krizan) Fabian and the ninth of twelve children. As a young boy he already knew he wanted to enter the priesthood. He graduated high school in 1945 then attended Providence College in Rhode Island from 1945-1947. In September 1949 he entered the novitiate of the Dominicans, Province of St. Albert the Great at St. Peter Martyr in Winona, Minnesota where he received the religious name of Cyril. He made his first profession of vows on September 30, 1950, and there continued his studies at Aquinas Institute of Philosophy in River Forest, Illinois from 1950 to 1953. He went on to the Aquinas Institute of Theology in Dubuque, Iowa from 1953-1957. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956. Father Cyril taught at DePaul University from 1957 to 1962 and was transferred to Loras College in Dubuque from 1962 to 1964 before coming to St. Mary's College in Winona in 1964, where he continued teaching for the remainder of his career. Although he retired in 2012 – after nearly 50 years of teaching philosophy at St. Mary's – he was named a Lasallian Scholar in Residence and continued to counsel and guide students until his death. In 1982 he was honored with the St. Mary's Brother Charles Severin Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2011 he was awarded the Presidential Award for Outstanding Merit at the university's Chicago Centennial Celebration. Father Fabian was as highly respected as he was frequently imitated. Armed with an unwavering faith, a dry sense of humor, and countless one-liners, he taught his students many valuable, lifelong lessons. He encouraged students to follow their dreams, he made them think, and he impressed upon that there could be more than one correct answer. His words of wisdom will live on through the generations of alumni who can recite his mantra: "Good, Better, Best. Never let it rest. Until the good becomes better and the better becomes best." There is a Father Andrew Fabian Endowed Scholarship at St. Mary's University created in his honor. Rev. Andrew Fabian OP was granted a Diploma of Affiliation on December 17, 2002, at the recommendation of the Brothers of St. Mary's College in Winona. Brother Cyril Andrew Joseph Fabian AFSC died on July 14, 2017, in Winona. He was buried in the Dominican Section of All Saint's Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
We pray for God's blessing on our living benefactors and affiliated members and for eternal rest upon our beloved Brothers, affiliated members, friends, students, family, and benefactors who have died on this day. May perpetual light shine upon them, may their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
