Linn was a member of the famous detachment of Royal Engineers that came round Cape Horn to British Columbia in 1859 following the Fraser River gold rush.

He married Mary Robertson in 1857 and had 6 children.

John was instrumental in building roads that make up most of the North Shore of Vancouver area. The Lynn Valley and related areas are names for him, even though they are spelled with 'Y'.
