Joan Clara (Kyar) Freyholtz was born on February 17, 1941, at the home of Grandma Clara Jensen in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Herbert and Myrtle (Jensen) Kyar. Joan was baptized as an infant on December 7, 1941, in Albion at her parents’ home, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on April 29, 1956, by Reverend A.V. Neve at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. She attended District #47 Country School, and in 1959 graduated from Sleepy Eye High School.
On July 27, 1960, Joan was united in marriage to Douglas Freyholtz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Wellington Township. Joan worked at ADC in Fairfax for a while and was a Mary Kay rep for a number of years. Joan and Doug were blessed with four children. They shared 56 years of marriage.
Joan was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Wellington Township and Ladies Aid.
Growing up, Joan loved riding horses and enjoyed participating in horse shows and trail rides. Her hobbies included sewing, ceramics, cooking, canning, writing and scrapbooking, crocheting, fishing, and relaxing at a cabin. She will be greatly missed on the girl’s annual Christmas shopping trip. A trip to Europe was a highlight in her life.
Joan especially enjoyed her family. She enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen and she was known for her making her awesome potato salad. The grandkids (and the adults) loved her baked goods and found out that you can make frosting from scratch. We have all been blessed to receive a crocheted afghan to nap in. Joan took pride in her flower and vegetable gardens.
