Catharine was educated at Holy Cross Academy in Silver Spring, MD and Sweet Briar College in VA.
Harry and Catharine married July 8th, 1950 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Chevy Chase, DC. Their wonderful relationship continued for 67 years.
Catharine was a strong and loyal navy spouse and always mentored and ensured the wellbeing of her fellow navy wives wherever she happened to be. Her four-legged family members were always appreciative of her efforts to ensure they would follow wherever she went. She strongly believed in Navy Family Life and was a lifelong advocate for its strength.
Catharine's passions were reading, education and literacy. She believed literacy and reading skills begin at home. Her family is very proud of her many years of commitment to literacy in Norfolk. She was a member of the Board of the Public Library and a major Friend of the Norfolk Public Library. During the 1980s she served as CEO of the business she and Harry started, Strategic Research and Management Service, Inc.
Catharine had a fine green thumb. She spent quality time at the Fred Hewitt Foundation for Norfolk Gardens supporting the tutoring of future young gardeners for Hampton Roads.
She was a member of the US Navy Ships Sponsors Society, having christened the USS Fletcher (DD-992) in July 1980.
She will be buried at the U. S. Naval Academy Cemetery. A Burial Mass for her will be held at the Naval Academy Chapel at 10:30 AM on June 15th followed by a private graveside burial. Her family will hold a Memorial Ceremony for her at the Town Point Club in Norfolk, VA at 11 am on June 22nd.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Friends of the Norfolk Public Library. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com .
