He is also survived by six children, Patrick of London, England, Thomas (Cathy) of Greenwood, IN, Dennis (Melissa) of Springfield, Ann (Bill) Clark of Springfield, John (Carolyn) of Austin, TX, and Rose of Springfield.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Brett (Sandra) Ryan of Morris, IL, Megan Ryan of Chicago, Joseph Ryan of Greenwood, IN, and Michelle and Julia Clark of Springfield; two great-grandchildren, Kyle, and Conor who is expected this fall, of Morris, IL; two step-grandchildren, Amy and Melanie Esela; three step-great-grandchildren, Angel, Sydney, and Elijah; sister-in-law, Caroline Ryan of Dacula, GA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, including a very special sister-in-law, Mary Agnes Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Robert, Maurice, Paul, Donald, Mary, Gerald, Rose, and William (Pete); and infant twin granddaughters, Melissa and Jessica.
Mick graduated from Waverly High School in 1947. During the Korean War, he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Badoeng Strait as a Hospital Corpsman. He was a member of and employed by the Illinois Air National Guard 183rd Wing for more than thirty-five years. Most of his employment was as a medical technician and he was affectionally known as "doc" and "chief." Mick was a member of the VFW Post 755 and the Elks Lodge 158. He had a great love of family and very much enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Mick enjoyed his daily walk, traveling, playing cards, and was a lifelong Cub fan.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to the nurses and doctors who took care of Mick during many years of fighting cancer, especially Dr. Mark Hansen, Dr. Robert Mosley, Dr. Leonard Giannone, as well as the staff of Memorial Medical Center and Memorial Home Hospice.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Springfield, with Rev. Joseph Ring, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
