Sarah Ellen Slaven Lay, 70, of the Sexton Lane in Oneida, died last Friday evening, March 18, 1994, at the East Tennessee Baptist Hospital in Knoxville. She was born in Fentress County on March 20, 1923. She was the daughter of the late John (Curl) Sexton and the late Melzuria West Slaven. She was a member of the Pentecost Baptist Church in Oneida. Survivors include her husband, Lindford Lay of the Sexton Lane in Oneida; one daughter, Priscilla Jeffers of Paint Rock; four sons: Lindford Lee Lay of the Buffalo community; Johnny Lay of Pegram, Tenn.; Jack Lay of Chapmansboro, Tenn.; and Jerry Lay of Nashville; nine grandchildren; one sister, Mandy ("Bill") Sexton; her stepmother, Nora Slaven of Oneida; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the West-Murley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Obis Byrd and Rev. James Laxton officiating. The Pentecost Baptist Church sang. Burial was in the Isaac Reed Cemetery in Oneida. Pallbearers were her sons, along with James Phillips and James Thurman Laxton. West-Murley Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
