Betty Spalding Wood was born on January 23, 1918 in Sadler, Texas and passed away at age 99 on July 8, 2017 at Pecan Point Assisted Living Facility in Sherman.

Betty was the third of seven children born to parents Jessie Hackleman Spalding and Thomas Jacob Spalding. Both the Spaldings and Hacklemans were pioneer settlers of the Sadler community. She grew up on the family’s farm and attended school in Sadler and graduated from Whitesboro High School. On December 31, 1939 she married Luther Wood who grew up on a farm near the Spaldings. Having gone to church and school together, the two had known each other all their lives. With the outbreak of World War II, Luther enlisted in the Navy on December 18, 1941. He was stationed in Washington, D. C. where Betty joined him before he was sent to England for the duration of the war. During the time he was overseas, Betty worked for an insurance company in Washington, D.C. As the war was coming to an end, Betty returned to her family in Sadler and then joined Luther in New Orleans until he was discharged from the Navy in 1946. The two then moved back to Sadler where they began farming. Both enjoyed all aspects of life on the farm. Betty particularly enjoyed growing, preserving, and cooking food from their large garden. She was a talented baker and always provided beautiful pies for family gatherings. When the pies were served, amid the oohs and aahs of the family, she would say in her self effacing manner, “they may not be fit to eat.” Despite her modesty, they were always delicious.

From 1946 to 1954 Betty and Luther enjoyed living and farming cotton and peanuts in the Sadler area. However, in 1954 North Texas experienced a severe draught that made farming almost impossible, and Luther had to pursue ways to supplement the family’s income. He went to work for Lone Star Gas Company in Whitesboro, and what started out as a temporary job evolved into a career for Luther. He and Betty gave up farming and Luther remained with Lone Star Gas until his retirement 30 years later. In 1957 the company transferred Luther to Denton, and Betty went to work for the City of Denton. In 1966 Luther was transferred to Sherman where Betty worked for Texoma Savings and Loan. Upon retirement in 1982 they returned to Sadler where they once again enjoyed life on the farm. Their idyllic life was cut short with the sudden death of Luther in 1988. Betty continued to live in the house she and Luther built in Sadler until age 94 when she moved to an assisted living facility in Sherman.

Betty and Luther were married for 49 years and had three children, Julia, Valerie, and Don. Betty never wanted for a lot of material things. Family was the most important aspect of her life. She loved caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She considered her six siblings her best friends and spent many happy hours with her sisters simply reminiscing and laughing about their childhood years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Luther, daughter Julia Cummins, brother D. B. Spalding, and sisters Nina Payne and Marie Spalding. Her sister Ann Curry predeceased her on July 5, 2017. She is survived by her brother Jack Spalding of Ft. Worth, sister Tommie Sue Spalding of Sherman, sister-in-law Mary Wood of Whitesboro, and brother-in-law Alford Siebman of Sherman. She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law Valerie and Sandy Freels of Denison, her son and daughter-in-law Cynthia and Don Wood of Lake Kiowa, and son-in-law Bob Cummins of Sadler. Also surviving her are six grandchildren: granddaughter Shelly Bitros of Dallas, grandson John Bitros and his wife Carrie of Sadler, grandson Trey Freels and his wife Tricia of Frisco, grandson Andrew Freels and his wife Chassity of St. Louis, Daniel Wood and his wife Jessica of McKinney, and granddaughter Diana Wood of Dallas. She has seven great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be Monday, July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Waldo Funeral Home. Her funeral will be on Tuesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. in the Waldo Chapel, with burial following at the Sadler Cemetery. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitesboro. Although she was unable to attend church services, she enjoyed receiving regular cards and prayer notes from the Parlor Sunday School Class.
