Bertha Marie Parker, 76, of Fredericksburg, VA, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017, at University of Virginia Health Systems in Charlottesville, VA. She was born on January 31, 1941, in Virginia to the late Jesse James, Sr. and Dorothy Jackson. She was granted her Angel Wings on Saturday, April 9, 2017 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA.

Bertha grew up living at her Aunt Nanny Ma and Uncle Lesley Terrell’s house. She attended public schools in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Bertha, affectionately known as Hun, married John Henry Parker, the love of her life of 57 years. She and her husband moved to Washington, DC, where they had two beautiful daughters, Twanna and Clintina. Bertha and John Henry loved southern living so much, they relocated back to Fredericksburg, Virginia to raise their girls. Prior to the death of their daughter, Tina, she and her husband adopted their grandson Shawn.

Bertha was employed at Huttig Sash and Door, Inc. as a Production worker. Her hobbies included accompanying her husband to many baseball, football and basketball games. She loved the casinos (Atlantic City and West Virginia) and was known for rubbing the screen and saying, “It’s for good luck,” before pulling the handle. She enjoyed family and her favorite saying before bursting into laughter was, “You are a mess.” She and her husband devoted a lot of energy helping all that they could, and never once cared about the situation. Children in the community referred to her as Grandma. Bertha spent the last six months of her life at the Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center, with her husband located at the same facility.

Bertha was preceded in death by her daughter Clintina “Tina” Parker-Thomas, sisters Lillie Mae Lucas and Josephine Jackson, and brothers Jesse James Jackson, Jr. and Manuel Jackson.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, John Henry Parker; two children, Twanna Washington (Keenan) and Shawn Parker; grandchildren, Teiona Thomas-Pruitt, Charles (Brittany) Sims and Jon-Luke Sims; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Christian, Bryan, Michyeus and Shawn, II; sisters, Martha Dunham, Magdeline Coleman, Jeanette Parker and Patricia Jackson; brothers, David and Larry Jackson; sister-in-law, Patricia (Stanley) Johnson; brothers-in-law, Willie (Linda) Parker, Clinton Parker, Sr., Wendell (Ethel) Parker, Clarence (Elaine) Parker, Nathaniel Parker, and Russell (Deborah) Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at A. L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg, VA, with viewing for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
