James Paul Peel, also known as James, Jim, and Grandpa, was born to Tommy and Hazel Peel on April 29, 1937, in Donna, Texas. Jim started his adult life at 14 years of age with 3 dollars in his pocket. His first job was picking cotton. Using that sack of cotton for his bed at night, James made this promise: "I'll never sleep on a bag of cotton again, unless I own the field." After a lot of demanding work and dedication, he started Cal-Valley Equipment Co., distributor of fuel pumps for the entire San Joaquin Valley. His company installed and supplied equipment for fuel stations from Bakersfield to Hawaii. At this time, he became a private pilot for his company.
In November of 1956, James married Jeanette Jean Mlnarik, a marriage of 60 years, who he always referred to as his "bride." They have four children, Cindy, Corrine, Gregg, and Carla. He is survived by his wife, children, 17 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 10, from 4-8 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 6 p.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1800 Bedford Way, Bakersfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations in his name to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
