In his lifetime, Martin Hugh Durborow Roberts, was a farmer, a soldier, a census taker, and a postmaster. He was with Co. H, NC State Troops during the Civil War. He was wounded and captured near Richmond, VA and held prisoner of war at Johnson Is., Ohio until the close of the war. He was then allowed to take the Oath of Allegiance and return home. He was Census taker for Twp #3 in 1880 and Postmaster of the Durbro Post Office in the Pleasant Hill Church Community. He named the post office after his grandmother, Elizabeth (Durborow) Roberts (his third name is his mother's maiden name). He is found in the NC PO survey, taken in Jul 1899, and his compensation was $10.89 as Postmaster of Durbro. He applied for pension 6 Jul 1903. The doctor's report says he is "old, has rheumatism, and can't work any scarcely." He is buried in Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery in Cleveland Co., NC
