Rear Admiral William Mervine

Born in Philadelphia, PA, on March 14, 1791, the son of John and Zibia (Wright) Mervine. Married Amanda Maria Crane on Jan. 12, 1815. Six children. Died in Utica, NY, on Sept. 15, 1868.

Served in War of 1812 on Lake Ontario; wounded in 1813. With Pac. Sqdn. during Mexican War, landed with sailors and marines on July 7, 1846 and captured Monterey, California. Failed in a similar attack against Los Angeles the following Oct. Military Governor of Northern California during that war. During the Civil War. He was the initial commander of Gulf Blk. Sqdn., setting up and directing blockade from Key West, FL, to Galveston, TX.
