Mrs. Mildred Lawson of Carthage died at Smith County Health Care at 4:06 p.m. Monday afternoon February 7, 2011 where she was admitted January 27th being treated for cancer. She was 75.

Her pastor, Bro. Larry Butler officiated at the 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon February 9th funeral services which were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial was between her son and husband in Smith County Memorial Gardens.

One of three children, she was born Mildred Ruth Reece in the Sullivans Bend Community on February 16, 1935 and was the only daughter of the late Mathew McDonald Reece who died at the age of 72 on October 31, 1983 and the late Oma Belle Franklin Reece who died at the age of 81 on October 16, 1992.

She was married to Smith County native and former Carthage Police Chief Harvie Thomas Lawson on October 31, 1953 in North Carolina where he was serving in the military.

They lost a son when a Citizens Band Radio antenna he was helping to install came in contact with a high voltage power line in South Carthage. That beloved son, 16 year old Smith County High School freshman Ricky Lee Lawson, preceded them in death on May 6, 1975.

Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church at Rock City and was a 1953 graduate of Smith County High School.

She and her late husband were avid campers and were members of the former Caney Cumbers Camping Club.

Mrs. Lawson, a Licensed Practical Nurse, received her degree through the nursing program of the Hartsville Area Technical School.

She was a longtime LPN at both the old Smith County Hospital and new Smith County Memorial Hospital.

She retired as a nurse with the Quality Care Health Care Center in Lebanon.

An accomplished seamstress, one of the joys of life following retirement was making costumes for plays directed by her brother, Mr. Bill Reece at Smith County High School.

Surviving are four children, Kathy Marks and husband Joey, Donnie Lawson and wife Sissy, Tommy Lawson and wife Evelyn all of Carthage, Stacy Lawson and wife Tanna of Chestnut Mound; brothers, Donald Lee Reece of Chestnut Mound and Bill Reece of Carthage; thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
