A Smith County native, Harvie was a son of Henry Thomas and Mary Frances Lawson. In October 31, 1953, he was married to the former Mildred Reece. He served four years with the US NAVY during World War II before returning home to graduate from Smith County High School in 1948 and reentering the army to serve 3 tours of duty in the Korean War. He was a 24 year veteran of the military and served as Carthage police chief in the mid 1970's and served as court officer with the Smith County sheriff's department prior to his death. After serving as police chief, he worked in quality control at the Hartsville Nuclear Plant where he retired from TVA in 1991.
He was preceded in death by a son Ricky Lee Lawson who was accidentally electrocuted in 1975.
Burial with full military honors with interment in Smith County Memorial Gardens.
He was survived by wife Mildred, one daughter, three sons, and nine grandchildren.
