"Jonathan E. Spilman was the writer of the music for "Away In A Manger". He was a well-known American who was first a lawyer and then a Presbyterian minister."

He was a lawyer 18 years, became a minister when 46 & a composer. While at Transylvania law school, 1837, he wrote the music for Robert Burns "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton" best remembered of his seven melodies. An Adaptation of this music used in one of the tunes to "Away In A Manger" words by Martin Luther.

He was connected with such famous personalities as Robert Burns, Martin Luther, President Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis, and Edward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
