Vernon "Reid" Nelson, 93, passed away November 1, 2014. Reid was born September 26, 1921 in Chipley, Fl to Julius and Viola Nelson.
Reid retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1964. He served on PT Boats during WW II and was also a veteran of the Korean War. He helped open the US Navy CTCS School at NAS Corry Station, Pensacola. He also completed a career in Civil Service, retiring in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael Reid Nelson.
Reid is survived by: the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Helen G. Nelson; his son, Steven E. Nelson (Melissa) of Miami, FL; daughter, Jan A. Humphreys (Ellis) of Newnan GA; and his granddaughters, Amanda, Brooke and Chelsea Humphreys.
Reid enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and his grandchildren.
Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation and gratitude the the nurses and staff of Pensacola Specialty Center for the loving care they provided over the last 8 months.
As per his wishes he will be cremated and buried at sea by the US Navy with full Military Honors.
