Xenia Letitia (the real spelling is unclear) was from Poland, where she married Dionys (Dennis) Gromolaksi. Due to Poland's economic depression, they made the decision to come to America. It was not uncommon for immigrants to change their ethnic sounding names to more American equivalents. Before her husband Dionys left for America, he dropped the "si" from Gromolaksi changing their last name to Gromolak that was later changed to Gromalak. Xenia Letitia's American name became known as Agnes Gromalak. The couple had 10 children; two died as infants. Besides raising the children, Agnes (Xenia) kept a garden and baked breads while her husband worked for the mining companies. It was said that Agnes Gromalak never complained of her hard work.
