Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Theresa E. (Sberna) Mitchell passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017 with her devoted daughter Gina by her side. Born on October 18, 1924, she was the second of four children born to John (Giovanni) Sberna and Carmelina (D'Anna) Sberna in Bellevue, Ohio.
She grew up in a loving Italian family and attended St. Mary's School (Immaculate Conception School). After graduating, she went on to Bellevue High School. During her senior year, she received on-the-job training at Ohio Cultivator. She graduated in 1942 and then attended Dyke & Spencerian Business College in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating in 1945.
At the age of 4, she met her future husband, William J. Mitchell (Micciulla) and they became neighbors when his family moved to America from the same town in Sicily (Sant' Agata di Militello) that her family moved from. On April 16, 1947, they were married at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue, Ohio. They lived most of their married life in Bellevue where they became the parents of Gina and Diane. They were members of Immaculate Conception Church. Theresa and Bill eventually moved to Sylvania, Ohio in November, 2000 to be closer to their children and grandchildren and became members of Little Flower Parish.
After graduating from business college, Theresa worked in the office of the Cleveland/Columbus/Cincinnati Highway Company as billing, rate, and revision clerk. She was also receptionist/stenographer for New Business Center in Cleveland. After moving back to Bellevue, she was employed by the Nickel Plate Railroad as stenographer to the General Yardmaster and private stenographer to the District Claim Agent for Norfolk-Western Railway until her retirement in 1983.
Theresa was actively involved in her children's activities by being a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. While her children attended Immaculate Conception School, she volunteered her time in the school office typing and doing other paperwork as well as subbing in the classrooms when teachers were ill. When each daughter was in the 8th grade, she compiled memory books for each member of the graduating class. She also volunteered her time to the church by preparing and typing the weekly church bulletins.
She was an avid seamstress and took great pride in sewing for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed hosting family and friends for holiday dinners, especially when her husband made his famous grilled chicken or homemade sauce.
She was a member Catholic Women's Study Club and prepared their yearly program booklets and presented programs on Padre Pio, Judaism, Our Lady of Fatima, The Angels and the Holy House of Loreto, and the Popes and the Angels. She and her husband were members of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, Club Amer-Ital and the Sandusky IAB Club.
Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Bill, son-in-law Michael Flowers, sister Caroline (Al) Gindy, brother Tony (Bertha) Sberna. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Gina Flowers and Diane Kudro; granddaughter Amy (Brad) Mayberry; grandson Kevin (Leslie) Kudro; great-grandchildren Dylan and Katelyn Mayberry; Michael, Gabriel, Daniel, and Samuel Kudro; brother Sam (Meg) Sberna; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She lived a long, full life and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Visitation will take place on Wednesday morning, June 28, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr Street (corner of Dorr and Olimphia) where Father Dave Nuss will celebrate a memorial Mass at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little Flower Catholic Church or to Ohio Living Hospice, 1730 South Reynolds Road, Toledo, OH 43614.
Our family is grateful to Father Dave Nuss for the special friendship and blessings bestowed on our mom, Ohio Living Hospice nurses, social worker, chaplain, and others for their gentle care of our mom, Dr. Mark Fine for the years of keeping her healthy, and all other doctors who kept her lungs and heart healthy and her teeth shiny white.
Thank you, Mom, for helping us to become the individuals we are today. Thank you for being the extraordinary woman and mother you were. We will do our best to continue to make you proud. We love you very too much and then some and more.
