Caroline, also known as Kay to family and Carolyn to friends, was the eldest of four children born to John and Carmela (D'Anna) Sberna. In 1921 her parents left their home in Sicily and sailed to the United States, landing at Ellis Island. They settled in Bellevue, a small town in northern Ohio, where Carolyn was born one year later in 1922. She had a good childhood, and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1942. Carolyn's first job was with a magazine printing company in Sandusky, Ohio, called Periodicals. During World War II she was working for the Bellevue Manufacturing Company, which was converted over to a war plant. She continued to work there where she provided her efforts towards winning the war. In the early 1950's Carolyn moved to Hialeah, Florida where she stayed with relatives. She lived in Florida for a couple years before returning to Ohio. In 1954, while working for a medical office near Toledo, she met Allan J. Gindy, an insurance salesman at the time. After a year long courtship they were married in Bellevue on January 22, 1955. Carolyn would remain a stay-at-home mom for the next thirty years. They had two sons, Sam in 1957 and Jeff in 1959. In 1972 they moved into a 50 unit apartment complex in Sylvania, Ohio, a Toledo suburb. Three years later Carolyn became the resident manager, a position she held, and much enjoyed, for the next ten years. During her time as resident manager she learned several maintenance skills, such as plumbing and electrical. She was like a mother to most of her tenants, and was loved by all who knew her. Her grandson was born in 1986, followed by her granddaughter in 1989. She loved being a grandma (Nani). Carolyn and Allan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2005, but sadly Allan passed away seven months later at the age of 77. Over the course of the next three years Carolyn fought a slow battle with dementia and Alzheimer's. The disease eventually took it's toll on her and she passed away, surrounded by family, at the age of 85. She was a loving mother and a loving grandma (Nani), and is deeply loved and missed by her family.
