Mr. Somerby has given one generation farther back in England....thereby correcting an error in the genealogy [pg.128d], which states that William, one of the first settlers of Dorchester, was the son of William, whereas he was actually the son of ROGER. Roger had a brother named William, the only son and heir of Roger and Joan (Franklin) Sumner, was bapt. at Bicester, 27 Jan 1604/5.

William Sumner, b. in Bicester, Eng in 1605; came to New England in 1636 and settled at Dorchester, MA; made freeman 17 May 1637, and at various times held many offices; Selectman of Dorchester 1637, and more than 20 other years. From 1663 to 1671 he was one of the Commissioners to try and issue small causes; in 1663 he was also clerk of the trained band; Deputy from Dorchester to General Court 1658, 1666-70, 1672, 1678-81m 1683-86; he does not, however, appear prominently on its records. William continued to own land at Bicester, Eng till 1650, as appears from a document in possession of one of the family.

Married at Bichester, Oxford, 22 Oct 1625, Mary Swift. ("Mary the wife of William Sumner Senior" died at Dorchester on 7 Jun 1676.
