LEWIS "JACK" BELL
May 25, 1927 ~ June 20, 2017 (age 90)

Lewis “Jack” Bell, 90, of Broken Bow passed away to his heavenly home on June 20, 2017, at his home in Broken Bow.

He was born May 25, 1927, in Honey Grove, Oklahoma, the son of Henry and Amanda Bell.

Jack was a WWII Veteran and enjoyed seeing much of the world as a Military Policeman in the US Army.

After leaving the service, he worked in the oil and gas industry in Kermit, Texas where he met the love of his life, Berneda Folken, on a blind date. They were married on February 28, 1953, and recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Jack decided he wanted to raise a family where he had grown up. They moved to Broken Bow in 1957, where he started his own custom home building business, and built many homes in the Broken Bow/Idabel area.

Jack was quite an entrepreneur having started many businesses while living in Broken Bow. He at one time owned a small lumber yard by his home in Lukfata and during this time, he was also an insurance adjuster and had a herd of cattle that he enjoyed working in the late evening.

Jack also sold Earth Stove wood burning heaters to many people in McCurtain and surrounding counties. He always said he loved meeting new people and was blessed to have met so many good friends doing what he loved.

He owned the McCullough Chain Saw Shop at the “Y” in Idabel for many years. Jack organized and started the Holly Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the Lukfata School Board as President, helping them undertake many building projects before he left office when his children had moved to Broken Bow High School.

He also spent many years on the Rural Water board in Broken Bow as well as the Holly Creek Cemetery Committee. Jack did a lot of work helping others and would rarely charge for his services for those in need.

He later decided to develop a 40 acre tract now known as Belpine Estates in Lukfata and had put in a convenience store for his home owners’ and other neighbors’ convenience. He was always striving to make Lukfata and Broken Bow a better place to live.

He always loved to tell stories about his deer hunting camping trips and really had fun joking around with those hunting buddies.

Jack enjoyed his life to the fullest having had many fun adventures. His oldest granddaughters fondly remember him always picking beautiful wild flowers and putting them in their hair as they walked down to the convenience store he owned for many years. He said many times that he was blessed to have had a very long and fulfilled life.

Jack loved his Lord and wanted everyone to know Him like he did. He was a long time member of Lukfata Baptist Church and he was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He always believed in doing what he could for others and having a good name in the place where he lived was very important to him.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, as well as sisters, Gladys Balcolm, Addie Moore, Neta Bell, Ethel Brown, Lula Mae Johnson, Bonnie Gibbs, Lucille Lafferty, Sylvia HIll, and Myrtle Burris and brothers, John Bell, Prince Bell, and Brown Bell. Jack was also preceded in death by his lifetime best friend, Julius R. (Bob) Brinkley.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Berneda Bell; daughter, Sharon Sliger, of the home; one son, Jack Randall “Randy” Bell and wife Michelle, of Weatherford, Texas.

He also leaves his grandchildren, Jaclyn Tyler and husband Jon of Jacksonville, Texas and Jenny Melchor of Irving, Texas, Matthew and Rachel Bell of Weatherford, Texas and great grandson, Bradley Melchor of Irving, Texas.

Jack’s family would especially like to thank all the special ladies with Assurance Home Health and Aspire Hospice for the exceptional job they both did and were always just a phone call away.

Visitation for friends and family will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bunch-Singleton Funeral Home in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Lukfata Baptist Church on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at 2 p.m. with Larry Brinkley and Bro. Phillip Conner officiating.

Interment will be at the Denison Cemetery in Idabel, Oklahoma.
